Alcatraz tours are fun for many reasons. They get you out on the San Francisco Bay on a ferry, let you explore Alcatraz Prison up close and personal and teach you about Alcatraz history to boot! This page will teach you the best way to get Alcatraz tickets also.
There are tons of San Francisco things to do but Alcatraz is at the top of my San Francisco attractions list! Alcatraz is 76 years young!
These are five things I love about taking an Alcatraz prison tour:
- I love riding the ferry over and being out on the San Francisco Bay.
- I love seeing San Francisco from the water and looking back at it. If the day is clear I can take some great pictures!
- I like getting exercise in the fresh air. It's a climb to top of Alcatraz. (Don't worry - they have a shuttle if you can't walk to the top.)
- I like walking around and listening to their award winning audio tape that is very interesting and entertaining. I've listened to it many times and it's always great!
- I like going into the cell blocks and feeling what it would have been like to be an Alcatraz prisoner. I like walking out of the cell and appreciating my freedom even more!
- If you are visiting San Francisco and have never been to Alcatraz prison make sure you go! Your friends are going to ask if you visited The Rock and you don't want to say no do you?
Tip: There is only one company (Alcatraz Cruises) who is officially chosen by the state of California and is able to drop people off on Alcatraz Island and let them explore and take the tour.
Make sure if you are buying a tour that it's one that actually lets you step foot on the island. Some tourists make the mistake of buying a tour that only goes around the island on a boat.
