The downtown Union Square area is the heart of San Francisco. It is the place where everybody starts out when visiting San Francisco. It is often crowded and noisy but has wonderful shopping, dining and theater choices.

The Gaylord Hotel is now called Gaylord Suites and was renovated just two years ago. The hotel is just three blocks from Union Square and downtown San Francisco. This is my favorite of the cheap hotels San Francisco. Rooms start at $75 per night and include fully equipped kitchenettes.
Fisherman's Wharf is the second most popular San Francisco attractions area in the city. Here you will find Ghiradelli Square, Pier 39, the Cannery and ferry cruises. Hotels are limited to just four stories so sweeping city views are not as good as the downtown area.

I had been to Fishermen's Wharf for years before I discovered the San Remo Hotel. It is just a few blocks away from San Francisco Bay and the Wharf. It offers no frills rooms from just $70 per night in a great location.
This is where I have found the yuppiest neighborhood's in all of San Francisco. You will find fine-wine shops, trendy boutiques, restaurants and really expensive waterfront homes. Also there is the Palace Of Fine Arts and the Exploratorium.

This hotel is a little out of the way from most San Francisco attractions but the price is right. The rooms are clean and spacious and will cost you from just $82 a night and with no charge for parking.

The Castro and Haight-Ashbury Districts are located on the west side of San Francisco. The Castro is the heart of gay and lesbian culture and is filled with friendly people on the weekends milling about. The corner of Haight and Ashbury Streets still has some of its counterculture hippie past.

The Metro Hotel is just a few blocks from the Castro and Haight-Ashbury districts. It's another one of the cheap hotels San Francisco. The hotel is very sparse but clean and staffed with friendly people. It has many repeat guests of friends visiting UCSF patients, doctors and people visiting family close by.
