The Monterey Hotel is a short walk from Hotel Pacific Monterey and Fisherman's Wharf Monterey, California. I stayed there on January 28, 2010 with my sister for a sister's get-a-way!

We paid $59 for the room for the night which we found on TravelZoo - my favorite place for great travel deals!

Background of the hotel.
It has an interesting history. If the walls could only talk!
Built in 1904 for $100,000 and considered "modern" with both gas and electric power. Had twin dining rooms and a male only bar. Cost in 1924 for a private room and bath was $2.50/night.
Bought in 1982 by Carl Johnson, CEO of Vintage Hotels who could see this diamond in the rough. After 3 years of reconstruction and two million dollars the lobby ceiling was fixed, plumbing upgrade and the old wallpaper was removed.
Sold again in 1995 and underwent seismic retrofitting, marble floors, custom carpet, and total interior redecoration.
Currently owned by Moonstone Hotel Properties. An addition was planned in early 2006 but seems to have been put on hold.

Thumbs down:
Bottom line: I loved the historic feeling of this hotel and it's nostalgic charm. I would stay here again because of that and the very helpful staff!
