The San Francisco International Airport and More

San Francisco International Airport is not the only way to fly into San Francisco. You can get to San Francisco from three different San Francisco – Bay Area airports. When you are making flights plans check your options with all three airports and you might save a lot of money – that’s what I do when booking a flight out.

Note regarding traffic: If you are arriving or departing from any of the three Bay Area airports between the hours of 5:00 – 9:00 a.m. or 4:00-7:00 p.m. be prepared for some pretty heavy traffic. Some highways/roads are worse than others but Bay Area traffic is known for being nasty and heavy.

Overview

The San Francisco Airport is closer and served by more airlines and has many international flights but it is therefore more difficult to navigate because it is the biggest and busiest airport of the three in the Bay Area.

Oakland International Airport or OAK it is much smaller and easier to navigate than San Francisco International Airport and the weather doesn't cause as many flight problems as in San Francisco.

Oakland International Airport or OAK information.

The San Jose International Airport is located 46 miles from downtown San Francisco and without traffic will take about 50 minutes to get there. This airport would be my last choice because it is the farthest away from San Francisco but if you are going to save a couple of hundred dollars on airfare then I would recommend it.

San Francisco International Airport

The first one obviously is the San Francisco International Airport. This would be my first choice when flying in to San Francisco as it is close and you will feel you have really “arrived” in San Francisco. It is located 15 minutes south of San Francisco on Highway 101. It is a busy airport and occasionally flights are delayed due to heavy fog. It is located right along the San Francisco Bay.

If you want more directions/details about the San Francisco International Airport.

It was renovated in 2005 and now has a very modern, high-tech feel to it. I love the looks of it. It is bigger than before and therefore I find it a little harder to know where I need to go – or maybe I was just used to it before the renovation. Nevertheless – there are many signs that will direct you where you need to go.

One note of caution: read the signs carefully if you are driving to or from the airport because they come up on you rather quickly and more than one time I have gone in the wrong direction because I wasn’t paying enough attention to where I needed to go.

Oakland International Airport

This airport would be my second choice for getting to San Francisco. Oakland International Airport is located northeast of the San Francisco International Airport across the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. It is 31 miles away from Union Square which is downtown San Francisco. MapQuest says it should take you about 35 minutes to get there. Be sure to take into account the time of day your arriving/departing and factor that into your plan.

The San Jose International Airport

The San Jose International Airport is my third choice for flying into the San Francisco/Bay Area.

I grew up in San Jose and we used to go and because we had 6 kids we didn’t have a lot of money for entertainment and so we used to pack tuna fish sandwiches and go and watch the airplanes take off!

This airport has an on-going expansion that started in 2004. It is a nice and clean airport and not as busy and trafficked as the San Francisco Airport. It has easy free access and is located very, very close to downtown San Jose which is also a nice place to visit.

Order a personalized children book to keep your kid's busy on the plane.
